"How to Beat the Heat: Tips for Surviving a Summer Heat Wave"

Hello Friends, it seems like we're in this for the long run. I hope you're all keeping cool. I understand that as gardeners, it's challenging to remain indoors when our hearts are in the garden. So, how can we savor the garden during this intense heat?

First and foremost, I hope you are staying hydrated and applying sunscreen if you are spending time in the sun.

To escape the heat, it's advisable to go to bed early and rise early in the morning. Take pleasure in the lovely sunrise while tending to your garden tasks.

Deep watering your plants first thing in the morning is likely the most beneficial for them.

Make sure to provide water for your plants in the evening, especially when the temperature rises above 100 degrees. This is crucial for plants like Hydrangeas, dogwoods, Japanese Maples, and Magnolias, which thrive in moist conditions.

An alternative way to effectively cool your plants is by utilizing shade cloth, available for purchase from various retailers, including the Johhny’s Seeds website. However, Johnny’s is my preferred choice for this product.

Shade cloths come in various percentages of shade. If you are experiencing extreme temperatures, it would be wise to consider acquiring shade cloth after conducting thorough research. What works well in one location may not be suitable in another. Additionally, it is important to observe the sunlight exposure in your garden. Crops such as tomatoes, peppers, newly planted vegetation, and those requiring ample water might derive advantages from using shade cloth.

Regarding fertilizing during hot weather, let's discuss nourishing our plants.

It is recommended to use water-soluble fertilizer, preferably in the morning. Ensure that you water and fertilize your plants at the base to prevent scorching. If you are planting during hot weather, consider using heat-activated fertilizer in the planting hole to aid the plant's growth. However, I suggest waiting until it cools down before feeding your plants again.

Remember to take insect repellent with you when you're in the garden. It's important to prioritize our health in all situations.

Stay cool and safe out there-

Tawnya
